The craft materials:

• 1 wooden clip
• approx. 1 m polyester cord
• motif bead/s
• colourful wooden beads
• optional: wooden lenses
• letter cubes for the desired name
• optional: 1 safety bead

The tools:

• needle and thread
• scissors
• lighter
• ruler

Step 1: Choosing and arranging the wooden clip and the wooden beads

Place your chosen wooden beads and the wooden clip in the desired order. This way you can think about your dummy chain design at your leisure. On the other hand, you can estimate the length of the future dummy chain – because the maximum length of a dummy chain is 22 cm without the wooden clip.

It is a good idea to use a safety bead at the loop end of the dummy chain. It has a larger opening where you can hide the loop's knot.

Step 2: Knotting the thread with the needle to the polyester string

Lay the polyester cord double. This makes the dummy chain more stable. Thread the sewing thread through the sewing needle and knot the thread to the polyester cord's loop. This little trick makes it easier to string the beads.

Step 3: Stringing the wooden beads

String the wooden beads one after the other. Start with the bead that will later be in front of the wooden clip. The last bead is the safety bead.

Carefully cut off the thread with the needle so that you do not damage the polyester cord in the process.

Step 4: Making the loop

Now bend the loop of polyester cord around itself to make a simple knot. Leave the knot loose at first and test whether the wooden clip fits through the loop. If this is the case, the loop is also big enough for attaching the dummy.

Then pull the knot into the safety bead and push all the beads towards it.

Step 5: Measuring the dummy chain's length

This is a good time to determine the length of the dummy chain. Measure with the ruler whether or not the unfinished dummy chain (without the clip but including the loop) exceeds the maximum length of 22 cm.

Step 6: Attaching the wooden clip

Tie a simple knot on the last wooden bead. Push one of the two polyester cord ends through the metal eyelet of the wooden clip. Tie a tight double knot. Carefully cut the ends of the string so that there is only about 5 mm left. Then fuse the double knot properly with the flame of the lighter. Attention, heat: If necessary, press the knot carefully while it is melted.

Step 7: Checking the dummy chain

Finally, check your homemade dummy chain. It is important that your DIY pacifier chain has no sharp corners and edges or detachable parts. Pull hard on the polyester cord to test that your welded double knot really holds.
